Dr. Rebecca Hoeck PT, DPT

Doctor of Physical Therapy
Functional Medicine Practitioner
Certified Pilates Instructor

Rebecca has completed her post professional doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine with a focus on Pilates for Chronic Low Back Pain. In 1989, she graduated from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy.  She has completed several courses in soft tissue and joint manipulation specializing in spinal and extremity manual therapy.  Her personal interest in Pilates as a fitness regimen and its healing qualities inspired her to become a Certified Pilates Master Instructor and integrate prescriptive Pilates into her Physical Therapy sessions as well as provide the Classical Pilates Method to her fitness clientele. She has completed her Certified Wellness Coaching Certificate, Integrative Dry Needling to offer a more comprehensive approach to her clients.

Over the past decade, Rebecca has been exploring the role of “Lifestyle Medicine” that has led her to the field of “Functional Medicine,” and the Institute of Functional Medicine. This certification program goes hand in hand with physical therapy as they both seek to find root causes of disease and dysfunction from an upstream approach, not simply treating the downstream symptoms (see more below on Functional Medicine). She struggled with diffuse chronic pain for years, that befuddled all practitioners, until she uncovered her answers with Functional Medicine.

Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is what I like to call “Mother Nature’s Medicine” or “Root Cause Medicine.” When I go to the doctor’s office, I’d like a more natural solution to my problem, not medication. We call that the “pill for every ill” solution and has become known as “Modern Medicine.” Modern Medicine certainly has its place when there are acute problems and crisis situations. Functional medicine does a really good job with prevention of acute issues and treating chronic issues such as autoimmune, pre-diabetes/diabetes, inflammatory conditions, digestive disorders, and many complex mysteries that Modern Medicine has a harder time cracking the code. Modern medicine treats the symptoms however, Functional medicine looks for the cause; looking through different lenses and asking different questions. Focusing on the upstream causes of illnesses and dysfunctions rather than treating the symptoms of the condition. The body is one biological system and we need to look at every system to find the answers. The results can be life changing and life promoting.
